Product Review

With its name so easy to confuse with Microsoft’s FrontPage, no wonder that Evrsoft’s HTML editing software “First Page” is so popular. If we are to believe their own statements, Evrsoft has reached over 3 millions downloads for this partially free product in the last five years. An amazing figure.
A beginner would review this software with superlative terms. A professional would find enough cons to discourage even a visit to the official Evrsoft website. But when a piece of software reaches such popularity, Evrsoft must be doing something right.
By compiling more reviews and testing the product ourselves, we’ve reached the following conclusions.
Pros:
- It’s free to use in its basic version.
- It has a user-friendly interface making it a great learning tool for beginners.
- Comes with a few basic HTML examples, another great benefit for beginners.
- Has rudimentary a CSS style sheet designer that is easy to use; recommended if you want to learn the basics of CSS or to create easy cascading style sheets to define fonts, links, etc. Though, not so great for complex CSS work.
- Write the code and preview your work with just a click of a button. However, the preview is not compliant with all browsers, so it might look different in Firefox than Internet Explorer, etc.
- Split screen preview allows you to see the code and the layout at the same time.
- A simple photo album gallery generator - useful when you need a fast solution.
Cons:
- Too many bugs cause the software to freeze or crush often, whether you use its free edition or its paid version.
- It is slow when you need to edit text. It’s also very slow when you need to code large files.
- Annoying nag screens with the free edition (you’ll need to wait 5 seconds to open a document and 5 seconds when you close it)
- Some anti-virus programs (ex: avast) identify it as spyware/ malware.
- Low customer support (some say inexistent).
- Long waiting periods, after payments have been issued, to get the access key for the professional (paid) version of the software.
Conclusion: good to learn and for small projects. Not recommended for professional use.
